IIASA’s annual 3-month Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) offers research opportunities to young researchers whose interests correspond with IIASA’s ongoing research on issues of global environmental, economic and social change. From June through August accepted participants work within the Institute’s research programs under the guidance of IIASA scientific staff. Funding is provided through IIASA's National Member Organizations.
Applicants to the YSSP prepare a research proposal that corresponds both with their professional plans and the agenda of their selected IIASA Program. Accepted applicants begin work before the summer by planning their research in close collaboration with their IIASA supervisors. The 2014 program starts on June 1, 2014, and ends on August 31, 2014. In order to be considered, applicants must commit to staying for the entire program.
Registration for the 2014 program opened on October 1, 2013. Closing date is January 13, 2014. Candidates will be informed about acceptance of their applications by March 10, 2014.

Utrecht Summer School started in 1987, with one course: Dutch Culture and Society. Nowadays the programme offers a broad selection of over 170 academic courses in virtually all disciplines organised by Utrecht University, HU University of Applied Sciences and HKU University of the Arts. These institutions offer high quality, challenging summer courses on bachelor, master and PhD level. All courses are taught in English by our academic staff. In 2013 the Utrecht Summer School attracted around 3000 students from over 98 different countries. ECTS credits are rewarded for most of the courses.
Utrecht Summer School is spread over several locations in and around Utrecht, with a satellite campus at the University College Roosevelt in Middelburg. International combination courses give students the possibility to attend an international course of which part of the programme takes place outside The Netherlands at cooperating partner universities in Italy, Germany, Estonia and many more places.

Description of the workshop
This training workshop will provide an introduction to using the Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) standard to enable many of the processes common to the social, behavioural, and economic sciences, from the conceptualization of surveys through data collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination. The focus of the workshop will be on the “Lifecycle” branch of DDI, version 3.2, which provides a detailed model of the metadata needed to support both human-driven and automated processing. The workshop will be organized in a task-oriented manner, with participants actively documenting real-world use cases in order to learn how best to employ the DDI model and associated technology. The use cases produced can be published as the final output of the workshop, as a resource to the broader DDI community. Participants are encouraged to bring their own organizational use cases.
The workshop is aimed at data producers, managers, and users who are not already experts in the DDI, or who wish to become more familiar with the latest version of the standard (version 3.2). There will also be information provided about DDI RDF Vocabularies and the envisioned shift in future versions of DDI Lifecycle to a model-based approach – the style of modeling and some of the standard implementation syntaxes (RDF and XML) will be covered. The workshop will include hands-on exercises and work within break-out groups on specific use cases, but will be accessible to participants with all levels of technical expertise.

CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) was established by the European Commission as an ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) in 2012. In 2013, Vetenskapsrådet (the Swedish Research Council) approved a proposal for Swedish membership in CLARIN, including a Swedish national CLARIN organization. The process of setting up SWE-CLARIN is ongoing, and it is likely that Sweden will be able to join the CLARIN ERIC during 2014.
CLARIN aims at making language-based material available as primary research data to the humanities and social sciences (HSS) research communities with the help of the sophisticated language and speech processing tools and language resources (LRs) that have been developed over many years through research in language technology (LT), and taking advantage of the fact that increasing amounts of text and speech material – including historical material – are available in digital form, thus allowing for the utilization of unprecedented volumes of text and speech data in HSS research. The expectation is that this LT-based e-HSS paradigm will lead to completely new kinds of research as well as to new ways of addressing old research questions.
This first national Swedish CLARIN workshop is organized in conjunction with SLTC 2014, the Fifth Swedish Language Technology Conference, in Uppsala on the morning of the 13th of November 2014. The purpose of the workshop is to take stock of ongoing activities falling within the remit of SWE-CLARIN, as well as to look ahead, by formulating needs to be filled and research avenues to be explored over the upcoming years.
In line with the exploratory nature of this first national SWE-CLARIN workshop, we welcome submissions describing completed, ongoing, and planned e-HSS work – crucially involving the use of LT and LRs – on (but not limited to):
- specific e-HSS projects
- digitization efforts involving intangible cultural heritage
- concrete efforts as well as general methodology development aiming at adaptation of LT and LRs to, e.g., historical or non-standard language varieties and genres (e.g., social media)
- multilingual aspects of LT-based e-HSS
- efforts to create workflows and effective user interfaces
- research questions relevant to the LT-based e-HSS paradigm
- how to reconcile large-scale quantitative and "close-reading" qualitative research methods
We invite contributions for either 10-minute oral presentations or poster presentations. Posters will typically describe ongoing or completed work, while oral presentations will be expected to describe needed or planned work. Both kinds of submissions should be in the form of an extended abstract. Accepted abstracts will be published on the workshop website prior to the workshop.
Submissions should adhere to the format of NoDaLiDa 2013,
(please ignore the abstract section) and consist of 2-5 pages (800-2000 words). Submissions need not be anonymous. Preferences regarding presentation format (oral/poster) may be indicated, but the program committee will decide which format best fits the overall programme.

Swedish population registers constitute a unique resource for research. Participation in SINGS aims to develop deeper knowledge, skills and scientific and ethical approaches regarding how different sources of data and registers can and should be utilised in research, preparing for a scientific career in the area of register-based research.
The graduate school is a result of the Swedish Research Council´sinitiative in providing a national focus on register-based research, through the ”Swedish Initiative for research on Microdata in the Social and Medical sciences” (SIMSAM), website www.simsam.nu.
The school is relevant for all quantitative scientific disciplines that use registers, such as epidemiology, public health, sociology, psychology, economics and demography and others. The programme includes a minimum of 12 higher education credits and will run for two years, beginning in December 2014.

For a decade IDCC has bought together leaders and experts in digital curation and the significance of good curation to research and innovation is now well recognised across the globe. At IDCC15 we aim to assess our progess and to help identify and stimulate debate on the critical digital curation questions for the future. The 10th International Digital Curation Conference will be held from Monday 9 February to Thursday 12 February 2015 at 30 Euston Square, London. The main conference will take place over the first two days followed by 2 days of workshops and other satellite events.
