ICPSR – Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

ICPSR is an internationally leading research infrastructure in social science research, with a long experience in data curation and access.

What is ICPSR?

ICPSR is an international consortium of almost 800 academic institutions and research organisations. ICPSR was founded in 1962 and is a unit in the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA.

The role of SND in ICPSR

The Swedish ICPSR membership is administered by SND. This means, among other things, that when needed, SND helps to disseminate research data from the ICPSR data archive.

Benefits to the research community

The Swedish ICPSR membership gives researchers and students in Swedish higher learning institutions access to the large ICPSR data archive, with more than 15,000 studies. You can search data in the organisation’s catalogue under Find Data. Users in Swedish HEIs that are connected to the ICPSR system “MyData” can download data directly. For some collections you can also make analyses online. If an HEI is not connected to “MyData”, data can be requested through SND. Contact us by e-mail at request@snd.gu.se and let us know which study you want to order.

ICPSR has some twenty thematic data collections, where data are organised around specific topics. The Social Science Variables Database (SSVD) enables users to examine and compare variables and questions across studies and series. SSVD currently contains over five million variables. ICPSR has also created a large number of resources that can be used for education and training purposes.

The Swedish ICPSR membership lowers the fee for researchers and graduate students in Swedish HEIs who want to participate in the “ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research”. The ICPSR summer school offers a large number of lectures and workshops, divided into two three-week sessions. The program also arranges about fifty three to five day long workshops.
