SCAPIS stands for Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage Study and is a unique research project within the field of cardiac, vascular and pulmonary disease.
The risk-factor pattern for cardiovascular diseases has changed during the last decades as smoking and blood lipids has decreased while metabolic risk factors such as obesity and type 2 diabetes has increased. SCAPIS is unique as it aims to investigate both heart, vessels and lungs and the comorbidity between COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and cardiovascular disease. Different diagnose groups in COPD are also investigated in SCAPIS.
The participants undergoes an investigation lasting for two days. The participants answer a general questionnaire and a questionnaire regarding food habits. They undergo computer tomography of the coronary vessels and lungs, in association with this anthropometric measurements are taken. The proportion between visceral obesity and subcutaneous fat and fat content in the liver are being determined.
