How do you use data from SND?

You are welcome to use data from the SND research data catalogue in your studies. When you find interesting data, you can either download them directly or submit a request for access to them, depending on their accessibility level. If you request data with restricted access, we require a signature from your supervisor in the submitted request. Remember that you can only use the data for the purpose stated in the data request.

If you want to gain access to data in order to try out various types of analyses in, for instance, SPSS, or if you for some other reason don’t want to make a request for data, you can search for data that are accessible by direct download in the catalogue.

Finding the right data

The SND catalogue has a filter that allows you to limit your search results by various options, such as subject, accessibility, language, and geographic location. You can also enter and search for keywords in the search field.

With SND you can find individual studies as well as several larger study collections. They consist of regularly recurring studies, something that makes it possible to investigate developments over time. Some of these collections are the Media Barometer, which studies the Swedish population’s media use; the national SOM Surveys with a focus on society, opinion, and media; and VALU, the SVT exit poll surveys.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, or if you have any other data-related questions, feel free to contact us at snd@gu.se.

Referencing data

When you use data from SND, it's important that you mention where the material comes from, and who has compiled it. In other words: to give a proper reference, or citation, to it. You should enter a PID/DOI (a unique link that points to the data material) and a reference to the creator/primary researcher in your document.

Example:

University of Gothenburg, Nordicom - Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research (2018).
Media Barometer 2016. Swedish National Data Service. Version 1.0. https://doi.org/10.5878/7367-q948

Most studies in the SND catalogue already have citations in different referencing styles that you can simply copy and use. You can find them in the catalogue entry on the ”Data and documentation” tab. There, you can also choose from common citation styles, such as the American Psychological Association (APA), Harvard, or Oxford styles.
