Memorials provide knowledge on 'Ålandic identity'

What can memorials tell us about people's identity? Quite a lot if you believe Lara Band. She explored 304 gravestones in Mariehamn, Parga and Norrtälje. The focus in her study was 'Ålandic identity' and its relation to Sweden and Finland.
– Research has shown that memorials provide a good general view of the identity of a population. They reflect a very emotional moment in people's lives, says Lara Band.
