SND works with various support activities to researchers when it comes to organising, maintaining, preserving and making data available.
The support and service that SND gives to researchers involves questions of data documentation, access to different types of data and information on secondary data analysis. This may also involve SND helping the researcher to take legal and ethical aspects into consideration when archiving, managing and disseminating data.
In addition to support by phone or email, SND also gives tips and advice on how to manage research material by
- lectures given by SND staff at higher education institutions in Sweden
- personal consultations with SND staff
- written information material that can be ordered from SND or downloaded from our website.
When a researcher has deposited research material, SND documents the data according to international standards and makes them accessible via a searchable web catalogue. SND also provides a number of studies at SND Online Analysis, where registered users get direct access to both data and online tools for analysis. In addition to the SND collections, we would also like to point to other searchable international data resources.
Guidelines for access to research data in Sweden and the EU
The Swedish Research Council delivered a proposal for National Guidelines for Open Access to Scientific Information to the Swedish Government in January 2015. The proposal contains guidelines for both research results (publications) and research data from publicly funded research. In EU’s framework programme Horizon 2020 (H2020), a pilot project (Open Research Data Pilot) has been launched, which makes Open Access (OA) to research data mandatory for a number of selected research areas and voluntary for other projects during 2014-2015.
Legal and ethical questions
SND’s legal expert will answer questions about the general legal framework regulating research and questions adjacent to these regulations. This may involve such questions as public access and privacy, personal integrity in research, ethical vetting etc.: Ask our lawyer a question. For further guidance in ethical questions please see the Swedish Research Council rules and guidelines for research: CODEX.
